The young Fyodor Dostoevsky discovered the French author at a literary event in St. Petersburg and was fascinated by his writings. Dostoevsky’s first literary work is a translation of one of his admired colleague’s novels into Russian. For the first time, and after many productions based on novels and stories by Dostoevsky, Frank Castorf stages a novel by Balzac and is determined to descend with “Cousin Bette” towards the abysses of the 19th century from a western perspective…
